Mark Steinmetz’s photographs, which are almost exclusively shot in black and white, eclipse the traditional boundaries of documentary, street, and art photography. He has spent his career relying on chance events to capture his images, expressing the beautiful composition of everyday life, and transforming it into something elegant through his lens.
This photo was taken about an hour after my mother's passing. I found myself in a parking lot – stunned, bereft. I looked to the sky and saw a cloud shaped like a doughnut; there were birds effortlessly ascending towards it in a thermal (rising warm air). I felt some peace. – Mark Steinmetz
